What features should be configured if you plan to sell abroad

Updated over 2 months ago

The Cartum platform is designed primarily for online stores that sell in the country of store registration, but we have many cases where our customers successfully sell their goods all over the world using their stores on Cartum.

In this guide, we will tell you which Cartum features will help you promote your store and sell products abroad.

Website language versions

In Cartum, you can create several language versions of your website according to your needs. By default, the English, Romanian, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian language versions of the site are already created in the admin panel.

You can disable each of these versions completely, enable them only in the admin panel for working with content, and enable them on the site for customers. Each language version can also be separately blocked from being indexed by search engines.

You can configure the available languages and add new ones in Settings → Languages.

Interface language

The site in English, Romanian, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian

For these language versions, we have already translated all the interface elements, i.e. the names of all buttons and service elements, form elements, notifications and trigger emails, etc. You can enable and disable the required versions in the admin panel section Settings → Languages.

Other languages

To set up versions of the site in any other languages, you need to translate the interface yourself. To do this:

  1. Go to the admin panel in the Website → Interface translation.

  2. Click Export and download the file for any language.

  3. You will get an XLSX file with two columns — key and value.

  4. In the value column enter the translations into the desired language of the values from the key column.

  5. Upload the file to the site using the Import button.

Currencies on the website

You can set a different currency for each language version of the site. For example, RON for Romanian, and USD for English.

Currencies on the website — Cartum

You can learn how to create other currencies and set the rate of price display in a particular currency in our instruction.

Prices in different currencies

Important: If your website uses several currencies, you must specify the main currency along with the prices for the products. Prices of products in other currencies will be calculated automatically at the rate you specify.

Currency switcher

If you want your website to display prices in different currencies, you need to enable the currency switcher in the header. Contact support to set it up.

Extended checkout form

Selecting a country

If you plan to sell outside of your country, you can enable the country selection field at checkout in Settings → General settings → Checkout → Display “Country” field checkbox.

Selecting a country at checkout — Cartum

When the country selection option is enabled, the buyer selects the country of delivery from the drop-down list, and then can choose the delivery city in that country.

Tips in the order form

You can add tips to the payment options that will be displayed in the order form. They can, for example, warn you about the transition to the payment system's website. Enter the required text in the Description field when setting up the payment method.

Shipping methods

Configure shipping methods for customers from other countries. You can link different shipping methods to specific countries.

For international shipping, in Settings → Shipping methods and carriers, create a new option with the type Address entry: zip code, street, house, apartment. In the settings, specify a clear name, for example, FREE Worldwide Shipping (5-10 business days).

Another shipping option that is acceptable for international sales can be created with the Address entry type — in this case, customers will see a two-line address form and a field for the zip code during checkout.

If necessary, set a fixed delivery cost in the appropriate currency in the settings, and this cost will be added to the order price.

Determining shipping methods for different countries

When setting up shipping options, you can restrict the use of a particular shipping method to certain countries only. To do this, specify the required countries in the Country of delivery field. Be sure to create at least one shipping option without country restrictions in case the buyer mistakenly enters the wrong name or selects a country from the list.

In particular, some payment services may require more detailed information about the terms of use of the store and obtain consent from customers. This can be done using the User Agreement function. It can be activated and configured in the admin panel in the Settings General settingsCheckout section, Terms of service menu.

User agreement — Cartum

The text of the agreement is posted on a separate page in the website structure: Website Pages User Agreement. It can be created in all languages available on the website by filling in the appropriate text fields.

Creating a feed for Google Merchant Center

Cartum allows you to generate product feeds for Google Merchant Center in every language that is enabled on your website. All feeds in different languages are generated automatically according to the same rules. The feature is available starting from the Standard plan.

Content translation

After enabling the new language version, you can upload self-translated content, namely, specify in the appropriate language:

  • names of website sections;

  • names of characteristics in templates;

  • information about the products, including the values of the characteristics;

  • banners for each language;

  • names of stickers;

  • texts on service pages

  • SEO texts on catalog pages;

  • SEO templates.

The section names are set for each language version in the properties of the catalog page.

Characteristic names are translated in the Interface translation tool.

Translations of product information, including characteristic values, can be uploaded when importing products. The import file should contain a separate column for each language version, for example, Description (RO) and Description (EN).

The settings for banners, sticker titles, texts on service pages, SEO texts on catalog pages, and SEO templates have separate fields for each language version.
